Shiva purana states that before the creation of universe every thing is in darkness and there exists no creatures. Every thing is immersed under water. From that stream of water a brilliant Lighting emerged. From this lighting emerged the lord parmeshwara along with parvarthi.

Parmeshwara had  sahsram heads, 2000 hands,  3 eyes the third eye is situated at his forehead. He was I nele megha varnam.

After that in order to see the sthithi of the universe he created Lord Vishnu. Lord shiva and parvathi appeared before lord Vishnu who was born with 1000 eyes, they said the mantra “Om Namh Shivaya “ to  lord Vishnu. Vishnu along with goddess laxmi started to reside at Viakutham. Lord Vishnu in his yoga nidhra acquired all the knowledge.

Latter on Lord Shiva created all the Vedas sastras, pancha buthas, yama. One big lotus came from of Vishnu. Lord Shiva was telling about Five trigunatmaka tathvamulu from this Bramha with Five heads was born. Bramha in order to find the beginning and ending of the big lotus kept revolving around Vishnu garbham and urdhvalokam. Parmeshwara said to bramha to recite ‘OM’.

Bramha was born with thamo gunam, due to that he was having a pride that he was the main and predominate in the universe , when Laxmi narayana appeared before Bramha and sarswathi he asked them who are you? Then lord Vishnu said to him that ‘ o son you were born at my nabhi kamalam , for the creation of universe and I came here to give you the knowledge about creation.

Bramha replied in pride to Vishnu iam the main and predominant person, and neglected the words of Vishnu and entered into conflict with Vishnu.  Lord shiva appeared between bramha and Vishnu in the form of firm in a shape of shiva linga

He said to them to find out the beginning and ending of the linga. Bramha went to find out the beginning and Vishnu went to find the ending of the linga.

Both of them failed in doing so and returned to the original place.

Lord shiva appeared between them and said to Bramha. ‘ you are born out of the five trigunathmaka tatvas in the lotus at the nabhi of Vishnu, you should listen to him for the creation of the universe and learn all the Vedas, sastras and Upanishads which are needed for the creation.’

Bramha with his pride asked Parameshwara who are you?

And he said that ‘ iam the creator of universe so only I should have five heads. Why you are also having five heads.

Parameshwara became very angry and called kalabhairava  to cut the fifth head of bramha, with that the pride of Bramha was gone , then bramha prayed to lord shiva. Then parameshwara replied you should leave your rajo gunam your are created for creation       ( srusti), Vishnu is created for maintenance (sthithi), and iam for maintaining a balance  (laya).    

He is the first person who was in existence , so he is called as adipurusha.

Lord shiva and Parvathi created the universe, and also bramha and Vishnu so they are called as JAGANMATHA & JAGADHPITHA.
